Me: I walked away from the Last Great Livejournal Update. I marked the passing of the Roleplay Communities. I saw the birth of a Dreamwidth without invite codes and I watched as users ran out, moment by moment, until nothing remained. No RP. No games. Just the Gothic Lolita community. I walked in universes where the laws of sane threads were discarded by the mind of a madman. I’ve watched bloggers freeze and fan communities burn. I have seen things you wouldn’t believe. I have lost things you will never understand. And I know things, secrets that must never be told and knowledge that must never be spoken. Knowledge that will make old Livejournal users weep. So come on then! Take it! Take it all, baby! Have it! You have it all!
I made this post ten years ago about a tumblr update I don’t even remember (putting the reblog button at the bottom of a post instead of the top, maybe?) and it still gets traction every few updates

The union busting firms are scared
As a fine dining cook, I found work in a union workplace around a year ago.
My 40 hours a week are guaranteed except for Jan/feb/mar when there’s not enough customers, I get paid almost twice what I did at any other restaurant, if I work overtime, (more than 8 hours in one day, or more than 40 in a week), I actually get overtime pay, (and it’s 1.5x my normal rate!).
I get holiday pay, and in addition I get to either bank or pay out my holidays if I work those days, (either a paid day off when I want it, in addition to the holiday pay, or I get paid an add’l 8 hours at 1.5x that week). I also get two floating holidays, 4 paid random sick days, 2 paid family sick days, and 4 paid “doctor’s note” sick days, (paid out by our health insurance), as well as general allowance to take as many unpaid sick days as I want without worrying for my job security. (I’ve been told that taking multiple months off is where we start to be concerned about abuse, so if I want to do that, I can go through our leave of absence procedures instead, where I’m allowed three 2-week periods a year generally for whatever reason I want, (If my manager wants to disagree, he has to get the union president’s approval), and after that it’s up to my manager to decide if he’ll accept them).
I get two weeks of paid vacation time a year, and an add’l week per year for every 5 years I work there.
We get our legally mandated breaks, which, I know that sounds like a low bar, but taking anything other than a smoke break in a kitchen?!?! Unheard of! I get two 15′s and a lunch every shift! I get to sitdown and rest my legs and not get flak for it!
I get a bonus at the end of the year, there’s official procedures for if my manager isn’t happy with me or wants to get rid of me, (three meetings, during which my union representative has to be present), (and getting rid of my classification doesn’t work, there’s rules for how someone ‘bumps’ other people if classifications are gotten rid of), and severance pay for when full-time employees that are downsized out of the company, there’s a pension plan, like …
Guys, I have a 40-page handbook which details all of the rights my union has won me, and believe me, I’ve never had any of these at any prior workplace.
And you know what my union dues are? $4 a paycheck.
Of course I’m going to pay my union dues for all of those benefits.Reblogging for this incredibly thorough explanation of what it’s like to actually have a contract in place at a union workplace. I reblog a fair number of posts about how people should organize, but if you’re like me, you might not know exactly what that can get you until you’ve actually gone through the process. Every contract is different because you bargain for what makes sense for your particular workplace, and every few years you re-negotiate with the employer to improve things in the next contract, but some things (like the right to have union representation when you talk to your boss about leave or discipline) are universal.
It’s worth every penny of your dues, I promise.

Biden gets a lot of flack for being a generic neo liberal rather than a cool leftist, and trust me I’m 100% on board with criticizing Biden, but it occurred to me that, at least by my standards, he’s the best president I’ve lived under. Clinton was just “What if Reaganomics but with a saxophone”, Obama did pass the ACA, but he also cut it to bits to appease the republicans who didn’t vote for it anyway, and he constantly bombed middle-eastern civilians. I’m not even gonna bother mentioning any of the republicans since I don’t need to convince my intended audience that they’re bad.
Biden, while he’s obviously had some major bad decisions (breaking the rail strike, failing to defend trans rights), has done more actual good than I think anyone else I’ve lived under. He’s nearly completely ended drone strikes, he’s addressing the debt crisis (everyone knows about the $10k, but very few I’ve seen know about the changes he’s made to how federal student loans work that make them far less of a burden/deathtrap), and now there’s the above, which I’m just learning about.
Never let perfect be the enemy of good, and while Biden is very far from being a perfect president, I’m pretty comfortable calling him a good one.
#Biden is not a cool leftist President#but he’s been genuinely more effective at passing progressive policies than literally any democratic president in my lifetime#I think this is partially circumstantial bc we live in an era of truly insane partisanship#very few elected politicians these days genuinely voting or making policy choices according to their strict moral compasses#I don’t give a fuck anymore I don’t want a wildly charismatic dem president who appeases the right in the name of unity#and wastes their chances at creating lasting legislative change during their time in power#I just want dems in power to do useful shit and Biden has done useful shit#that’s why I’m gonna vote for him again!
For all the people who insist they never trust politicians, they are sure adamant about waiting until the stars align and political Jesus comes down from the clouds to save us. If you actually didn’t like or trust politicians you would accept that the great majority of the time we are going to have to work with mediocrity.
Biden is boring and uninspiring for sure, but he is significantly less offensive than the vast majority of other options and he is someone we can influence. We want someone we can influence and push towards our positions. Biden has shown that if he isn’t an ally, he at least can be persuaded or pushed into doing what we, the left, want. There are few candidates we can actually say that about.
The point is not that he’s perfect. The point is that he’s very clearly shown that he cares about using his political mandate to make things better. The point is that he cares about accountability. The point is that he cares about what historians will say about him in the future.
The point is, these are good qualities in a leader.
